Jazmine Sullivan
Jazmine is a Philadelphia native was born and raised in the city. Her mother Pam was a vocalist for the backup band of Philadelphia International Records. When she was five years old, of age, her dad landed a position as a curator of the city's Historic Strawberry Mansion in the Strawberry Mansion section, and her family relocated to the historic landmark. In 2005 she graduated from the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts as majoring in vocal music. Sullivan began her singing career as a contralto in the kids' choir, before joining after a couple of years, she joined the adult group. Sullivan wasn't exposed to secular music at first. "I started singing solos in church, and somebody asked me to commit to record a gospel song when I was eleven. But I wasn't prepared to do that," she says. "Then when McDonald's offered a competition to youngsters in the major cities I had the opportunity to perform 'Accept What God Gives' on Showtime in the Apollo and the audience responded really well". The singer performed along with Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday party at thirteen. Sullivan was first signed to Jive Records at the age fifteen. When she was 15 the label signed her to Jive Records. They recorded an entire album there, but it wasn't made available for release. Sullivan was then dropped by the label. Missy Elliott was her producer for some songs on her first album. Among them "Backstabbers" performed by Timbaland, which Elliott wrote, is a significant moment in their partnership.
